For the leader who has already done the values exercise, felt clear for a week, and gone straight back to building the thing that drains them.

A first-grade teacher told Dr John Demartini’s parents their son would never read, never communicate effectively, and never amount to much. He dropped out of school, hitchhiked to California at fourteen, and was surfing Hawaii’s North Shore by the time he nearly died at seventeen. He has since taught in over 100 countries and written more than 40 books.

At eighteen he asked himself how to master a life, and mapped the answer across seven areas. When he later went looking for a way to measure what people actually value, he found the existing academic models too subjective. They described how a person ought to be. So he built his own set of thirteen criteria, and has since run millions of value determinations.

In this conversation, Celinne and Dr John Demartini examine why most people cannot name their own values honestly. How delegation preceded his wealth rather than following it. And what happens when someone finally sees their real hierarchy and it doesn’t match the business they already built. You’ll hear the six-column exercise that took him from doing everything in his own clinic to doing only four things.

KEY IDEAS:

Your life is the honest answer: Dr Demartini stopped asking people to describe their values and started reading the evidence. What fills their space, their time, their money, their attention. Most people describe who they think they ought to be, which is why the exercise never holds.

Delegation is what produced the wealth: He read The Time Trap at twenty-seven while doing everything in his own clinic with one assistant. Eighteen months after listing every daily action and reprioritising by productivity and meaning, he had five doctors, twelve staff, and far more net income doing four things.

The imperatives give you away: “I’ve got to, I have to, I must, I should, I ought to” are the signature of a value injected by someone else. Language is the fastest available diagnostic for whether a priority is genuinely yours.

A business runs on its people’s values: Nobody is dedicated to a business. They are dedicated to what they value most, and using the business as a vehicle. Congruence between the role and the person’s hierarchy is what makes engagement possible.
