Happy Money: Why Earning More Never Fixed the Stress — with Ken Honda | Ep 84

For the leader who has made the money, still feels the squeeze every time it moves, and suspects the number was never the variable.

Ken Honda learned about money from his father from around the age of five, started investing at twenty, and semi-retired at twenty-nine to raise his daughter. By most measures that is where a money problem ends. He has spent the decades since studying happiness and money. And arguing that the amount was never the problem in the first place.

The distinction he draws is between money that makes you smile when it arrives and when it leaves, and money that arrives with a squeeze. Most people, in his reading, live inside the second flow, and earning more takes them deeper into it, because the cost of everything rises alongside the income. He calls the condition a trance, and traces it to a money game everyone is enrolled in without consent, with nobody available to teach the rules.

In this conversation, Celinne and Ken Honda define happy and unhappy money, and unpack ikigai — the Japanese term for a life worth living — as the route out. You’ll hear the arigato practice Ken learned from his mentor, what it costs a family when a founder draws energy from his children’s future, and Ken’s own answer to what he may already have outgrown.

KEY IDEAS:

Money carries the state it moves through: Happy money makes you smile arriving and leaving. Unhappy money squeezes at both ends. Ken’s position is that most people are living in the second flow, and that the flow determines the stress more than the balance does.

A bigger income raises the cost of everything: When earnings double, so does the cost of living the life that earning it requires, which is how a month can still end in a pool of bills. Ken’s answer is to check the inventory on a three-year horizon — the job, the school fees, the house, the company itself — and to treat downsizing as a legitimate direction.

Your ikigai is buried in your past: Ikigai literally means a life worth living. Ken locates it in childhood and upbringing, and in the wound a person has already tended, because the thing that hurt you most is the thing millions of others are still carrying.

Read the energy balance sheet: Ken asks whether a person’s energy is expanding or shrinking, and points out that a founder running on adrenaline often can’t feel the drain while the family absorbs it. He calls it the family energy quota.
